FP011: ZU BOX *1 - NUZU

'ZU BOX *1’ is the debut EP from NUZU, and an explosive entry to the NUZU canon. With influences ranging from industrial, afrobeat, punk, drum n bass to trip hop, ZU BOX*1 shows how far their sonic and visual net is cast.

‘NAILS’, the projects opener, was written and recorded back in 2019 before NUZU even had decided on a name and is the perfect introduction to their sound. The production features samples from construction sites, and a punctuating siren that keeps the track bulldozing forward. Teige and Kayes are both sounding at their sharpest and most visceral, bouncing from themes of heady alcoholism to fierce threats and blunt admissions.

'PIPES' is essential in understanding the ZU’s story. The lead single is a ferocious wall of sound, owing as much to post punk as it does drum n bass and early grime. With the two main rappers at their most playful, each verse is sprayed with the most self-confidence in their character yet.

'TEETH IN', the projects closing track is a sleek post-apocalyptic club thumper. Boastful bars barked over production that sounds like an eerie film score meets cold metallic afrobeats result in a sonic experiment that warps contemporary UK Rap sounds with a NUZU twist. The track is a defiant conclusion to the project and will most certainly keep fans guessing for the next release.
